Dr Philip Gibbs is a Divine Word Missionary priest serving in Papua New Guinea since 1973. Originally from New Zealand, he graduated in Sociology from the University of Canterbury.
He has a Post-grad Diploma in Anthropology from the University of Sydney, a Master of Theology from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, a Master of Business Administration from Divine Word University, and a Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University, Rome.
He is a Research Affiliate in the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University. Dr Gibbs has worked in PNG as a Parish Priest, seminary lecturer, and researcher at the Melanesian Institute.
Currently he is Vice-President Research and Higher Degrees at Divine Word University, Madang, Papua New Guinea. He is well known for his research and advocacy against sorcery related violence in PNG and has contributed publications such as the volume Talking it Through from ANU Press.
