It escapes my logic that the old, worn out argument about deterrence never dies.
The death penalty has never been, nor will it ever be used as a deterrent BUT as a punishment for a crime committed.
If, as an additional bonus, another person will NOT commit a crime because he/she is realizing the consequences, this is just fine with me.

And there are fail-proof methods to avoid the execution of an innocent person, but this is a to be explained another time.
